The Basics of Understanding the Bible

Matthew McGeeIn order to understand the Bible, one must study dispensationally, that is, rightly divide the scriptures (2 Timothy 2:15). But what does it mean to study dispensationally or to rightly divide? On the most basic level: It is reading a Bible passage and asking, “Am I in the group of people being spoken to here?” That is, “Is this passage speaking to Christians?” Most commonly, we are taught that the entire Bible is written to us. But that is not entirely correct. The whole Bible is written for us, for our learning, but not all of it is addressed to us.

For example: When God gave the law to the people of Israel through Moses in about 1500 BC, one of the laws was to do no work on the Sabbath. The Sabbath lasts from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. When a man was found picking up sticks on the Sabbath in Numbers 15:32-36, God commanded the people of Israel to put him to death by stoning. Now does that mean if we see our neighbor mowing his grass on Saturday morning that he is committing a sin? Should we round up the whole neighborhood and kill him? Of course not. We must realize that the children of Israel were not Christians. We are not under the law of Moses like they were then. They lived in a different dispensation from us. (more…)

Finding God Within and Without

How do I find You God?

God is Love.
If you have ever loved,
If you have ever been loved,
You have experienced God
from Within and Without

God is Truth.
If you have ever told the truth,
If you have ever discovered Truth,
You have experienced God
from Within and Without

God is Beauty.
If you have ever helped to create something beautiful,
If you have ever witnessed beauty in any of it’s myriad forms,
You have experienced God
from Within and Without

God is Good.
If you have ever done or thought something good,
If you have ever recognized goodness in or through another,
You have experienced God
from Within and Without

All of those experiences, those gifts,
of Love, Truth, Beauty and Goodness
were directly from God through you. or to you.

Glad to Meet You God. let’s hang out together.

Desiring the End of the World

Paul Brandeis Raushenbush

Why are we so fascinated with the May 21, End of the World phenomenon? For many of us, the spectacle of these people with their doomsday signs and complicated calendar calculations provides good comic relief and finger pointing — “look at the freaks.” But as a piece by HuffPost Religion writer Jaweed Kaleem shows, the followers of Harold Camping and his end-time crusade are real people whose conviction of the impending end of the world was seemingly inspired by a deep desire to create meaning and certainty in life within our difficult and chaotic world.

Eschatology is the fancy term religious scholars use to talk about the end of the world. It is derived from the Greek word eschaton, which means the last or the end. Eschatological thought in the Bible is consistently marked by a sense of desperation concerning the way the world is, as opposed to the way the world ought to be. Apocalyptic scriptural references anticipate that God‘s reign will break into this world; a promise that ultimately provides hope in the future as it projects a time of radical departure from the difficult realities of the present. “TRUE VS. FALSE CHRISTIANITY”

By C.H. FISHER

The best way to define what is a true Christian and what is a false Christian is to define true Christianity according to the Bible.  I know that many people say that this is not a good way to discover the difference because there are many forms of Christianity based on the Bible.  There are also groups that most Christians would define as cults that are based on the Bible.

I disagree with such a conclusion.  If there is false Christianity or cults based on the Bible then they have not interpreted it correctly.  Thus, they are founded on misinterpretation and falsehood.  One can misinterpret most anyone’s statement if that is their wish, but everyone should agree that there are statements that cannot be misinterpreted.  For example, I could say  “I’m thirsty.”  One could come up with all sorts of commentaries on that statement, but even a child understands it and everyone would eventually have to admit that the statement is declaring that I am thirsty. Has the Bible Been Changed?

Nevertheless, some people, especially those who don’t like the moral constraints of the Bible, want to say that the Bible has changed since it was written. If Jesus was proved to be the authentic Son of God through the resurrection from the dead, this cannot be so.

The textual evidence for the integrity of the Bible is better than for any other ancient book or document. Compared to other ancient writings, we have more manuscripts still in existence, and manuscripts whose age we know is much closer to the time of original writing, than it is in the case of other ancient writings. All variations which exist are of a very minor nature which do not affect any major doctrine of the Bible. We believe that it can be deduced which manuscripts in fact are closest to what was originally written, but it is outside the scope of this lesson to discuss this.

There are amazing mathematical patterns in Bible when looked at in the original Hebrew and Greek languages. Hundreds of facts based around the number 7 appear in every passage of the Bible when you look at the numerical values of the words in the original Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible. Many of these patterns were discovered by Ivan Panin in the 19th century. This discovery turned him from being an agnostic to being a Christian. His subsequent research provides a virtually irrefutable evidence that the Bible is not simply the product of human minds. No computer today could create such a text. The conclusion is once again that the Bibleis the Word of God. (more…)

What is Faith?

Faith is not religion. Many times people say “We have our faith”. What they mean is this: “We have our religious ideas and doctrines, our traditions, our ways of doing things passed down through the generations. Don’t you try to change them.” This is not the Biblical idea of faith.

Faith is not mental assent. It is not agreeing with your mind, “Yes, that is true.” Many professing Christians believe mentally that the Bible is the Word of God, but this faith does not change the way they live. It is not a faith that can save. (James 2:14)

Even demons have that kind of faith. They know and believe that God exists (James 2:19) – and tremble. They have no loving confidence in God. (more…)
